Can anyone else with a 1.2 dig-T stick their finger up their exhaust and see if it's clean or is coated in black sooty carbon?

Mine is filthy with carbon, which surprised me in a 3.5 year old petrol engine.

I have just discovered the air filter has never been changed though, as I stupidly assumed this would have been done at one of the 3 main dealer services.  I'm sure they used to.

Hi

The things I do for this club Shocked.

Just got on my hands and knees and wiped a tissue-covered finger up my pipe Embarrassed.

Yes it's got soot on it, but wouldn't any exhaust pipe?

On my pre-DPF diesel, it was covered in soot as you would expect.  On the DPF diesel it was sparkly clear, as I guess the DPF caught all the soot.

I was under the impression soot/carbon was a diesel thing, not really on petrol engines which are supposedly "clean" emissions.

I changed my air filter at the weekend after realising it hadn't been changed by Nissan at the services.  It was so dirty I couldn't see a bright LED light shining through it.

First drive after I changed it, got the display on the dash saying I've beaten my best MPG (45.5).  Second drive I beat it again (46.8).  Seem to be getting 40+ all the time now compared to 34ish before.

Really annoyed with myself for not checking if it had been changed after the two services, probably wasted loads on fuel due to low MPG over the last year.
