Hi all,
I need some advice. My 2010 1.5 dCi started to spit some white/gray/blueish smoke when I change gears. It happens randomly, usually when the engine is not heated up yet, but it's not cold, either. I stopped today to check the colour of the smoke, it seems that it only smokes when I press the clutch. The oil level is fine and it's not milky, I lost some coolant due to a defective thermostat housing, but it looks like the coolant is still leaking.
Any thoughts? I am quite worried... Thanks.

Hi

WHITE SMOKE
Normally means that the fuel injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly. The smoke will burn your eyes.

Engine/pump timing out
Fuel starvation to the pump causing the pumps timing not to operate correctly
Low engine compression
Water/petrol in the fuel

BLUE SMOKE

The engine is burning engine oil

Worn cylinders or piston rings
Faulty valves or valve stem seals
Engine over full with engine oil
Faulty injector pump/lift pump allowing engine oil to be mixed with the diesel

Might just need some adjustment, or a clean up?

Doesn't always have to be bad, or expensive.

Phone up first thing and report the fault so it's a matter of record, or even write a letter and hand deliver?
I wouldn't worry too much about a little blues smoke in terms of engine failure. However, it could mean higher than expected engine wear, I wouldn't expect it on a car under 70000 miles.
