Sorry to post this, but I've read (quite literally) every post on this forum (as well as the manual) relating to changing headlight blubs and I must be missing something really, really obvious. I can't for the life of me get them out
![]() This is a facelift 2010 n-tec model. I unscrew the big round cover thing, then what next? I tried twisting the bulb both ways but it won't budge. I tried pulling the black plug off, it won't budge. Same for both sides. Please tell me I'm doing something stupid ![]() ![]() Edited by Cashkai - 04 Jan 2013 at 4:18pm |

Hm, on my y2007 is very simple. On the back of the light is a cover and inside is bulb. To get the bulb out you just twist/turn that connector- bulb holder.
But facelift models have different lights than pre-facelift. Can you make any pictures? |

Well, a blown bulb forced my hand
![]() Turned out it just needed a little more purchase. A twist with some water pump grips allowed me to twist the bulbs out. Would have been near impossible by hand. The grips just reached inside enough to twist it out. There's not enough room for them on the offside though - that one needed brute force, some swearing and a little luck ![]() |

I found it helped to remove the air intake hose, and light up the area with a flashlight so I could see what I was doing.

Mine must be different. On the offside it's a fluid bottle getting in the way. On the nearside it's the fuse box.

Had to replace both of mine within a couple of weeks of each other recently. The nearside went first so brought a bulb at Halfords. They offered to fit it, I think for about £6. No thanks, not at that price. So working by shop light I tried to change the bulb. First thing I did was drop the large cover which came to rest on the underside engine panel. Took an age to persuade the damn thing out. Then the fun bit. The handbook says you should turn the bulb holder a quarter turn anti clockwise to release bulb. With so little room to play with this is not easy and it almost seemed the amount of force needed would break something. Lost patience so tried again at work the next day. Did it but lost most of the skin from the back of my hands. When the second bulb went the car was booked in for it's MOT the following week, so the new bulb was left on the dashboard for my nice friends at West End Motors in Bodmin to fit.
In 30 years of motoring, this was the most difficult set of bulbs to change in any car I have ever had! |

I changed both dip beam bulbs when I first got my 2012 facelift ntec+.
Upgraded the bulbs to phillips xtreme, possibly the worst headlights i have changed, the amount of force you have to apply is astonishing. I ended up wrapping up the light fitting with cloth then adapting { bending } an old spanner to allow stronger purchase. If you could get your whole hand in you could possibly twist quarter turn anti-clockwise.

Did someone consider changing the dipped and/or high beams with LED lights (seems to me a good alternative to HID Xenon kits)
(only drawback so far: not indicated if they are Canbus error free ![]() Any feedback is appreciated

Next time I buy a car I will ask the salesman to demonstrate changing bulbs using the tools provided.
![]() On my last car, a C4 Picasso it was an absolute b'stard of a job to change the headlight bulbs. And the rear lights!! Who carries torx screw drivers with them?

I like the fact that the LED lights have a 25000 hour lifespan, and come with a full 12 month warranty.
So if I leave them on for 24 hours a day for a whole year, I will use 8760 hours. Seems like the warranty is 16240 hours short. ![]() |

Gotta be honest guys re LED headlights, leds just don't have the light power of ordinary bulbs let alone replace HIDs

And why not? New Seat Leon has LED lights in the optional light package and in many reviews the lights are praised to be a good as a HID system. Except the main beam. That is bad and would require a halogen assist bulb. |

Hi downtime the tech still hasn't caught up with the average user yet and it will be a long while till they get a system that will retrofit in vehicles like the qashqai.
It looks as if the vehicles that are using LEDs at the moment will improve a lot over the next few years but its still early days as far as I am concerned, a good halogen/xenon or Hid is still hard to beat. But not for long |

Wow... The OLED lights were very cool. But yes. Retrofitting LED lights to halogen housing most likely won't offer very good results. My initial comment was purely to are LEDs sufficient or not. Sorry wasn't very clear with that ;) But if the whole light assembly is designed for LEDs then the results are usually good. For example I've personally seen Prius' LEDs and they're are very good. Dipped beam I mean. I would not retrofit leds to dipped or main beam. |

Hi sadsod, cant remember the size of the spanner as was an old rusty one found on the shed floor all markings badly rusted out. I just bent it in a blind anger in me vice till i thought it would fit.
As mentioned I had wrapped headlight fitting with a few winds of sturdy clean rag, I dont have the spanner as when i had a clear out i forgot and got rid of it. I think i bent it bout 1 inch from the jaws not a full 90 deg bend just enough to get it on and get purchase with my had gave my fingers extra grip, still lost some skin though. Good news though if when you get it out before you put back in rub some vaseline around fitting it comes out a little easier, i didnt need the tool second time.

Changed all four headlight bulbs today and what an ordeal it was. I got them out by using a 19mm open ended spanner 'end on'. FYI I fitted Osram night breaker plus, £24 (for 4) inc postage off ebay. Now to 'see' if the loss of skin was worth it!

You're kidding me!!!! My Jag X Type was such a b....tard to get bulb out I ended up paying a chap who worked at a Jag indy, tenner each time he headlamp bulbs went... which was abut every other month.
Our QQ 2010 Ntec now has an off-sie bulb out and Im reading this is yet another vehcile which requires you to say goodbye to your knuckles to do the most basic of maintenance after putting washer fluid in, changing a poxy bulb. Is it really this hard? Last experience I had with Halfords was a nightmare, he suggested I take my old Jag to their autocentre where they would have to remove the fuse box..... clowns! |

Not wishing to denigrate anyone's mechanical prowess on here, but it is easy compared with a Vauxhall Vectra, which requires washer bottle dismantling on one side and air filter box and piping on the other.
Also a fiat Ducato can I used to drive you had to take if the radiator grille and remove the whole headlight assembly. Chrysler PT Cruiser. Jack up and remove front road wheel makes changing a headlight, sidelight out indicator easier. But even if you don't, it's a knuckle Skinner with dirty wheelarch to boot. So when I change a bulb in the qashqai, it takes me five minutes and up against my other vehicles, is quite easy. Edited by John C S - 28 Oct 2013 at 2:30pm |

It,s not getting to them thats the issue. They are not held in with spring clips, it's a bayonet type fitting which initially is very hard to get enough purchase on to remove. Once it's been done once it seems to come off a lot easier on following attempts luckily.

A quick spray of silicone stuff on em before stuffing em back really makes it easier to take out later.

Not wishing to tell folks how to suck eggs but if you are going to spray the fitting do it before you fit the bulb - And dont spray the headlight side, you do not want it inside the headlight! I myself used a smear of vaseline.
