Currently on Renault's website under heading "About Renaults"

( FAP )  Particulate filter or DPF as we know it,

Quote,

"This innovative solution is not suitable for vehicles which are solely used in urban areas, where cars move at slow speed and frequently have to stop and start, but it is equally well suited to other conditions."

But as Mohawk said, so far it seems to have been sorted and there are no reports recently of anything amiss. Also it depends on when that statement by Renault was last updated, so it seems promising Kev!  Smile

One issue I'm sure lots of people have not gave much thought to is this, what if we have another very heavy winter like 2009 and the car wants to regenerate, do you try and floor it or drive in low gear at high revs in the snow and ice.
Safety issue IMO!

I mentioned before but will again here! My 3 year old bmw has a dpf and 95% of my driving is short journey slow speed driving and I've not had 1 bit of bother from it.

Renault should roll up their sleeves and build an engine that can work in town at low speed like the bmw engine instead of just disclaiming an engine that isn't practical for anyone other than the travelling salesman.

Was talking to a skoda dealer and he says he uses his car locally. Whenever the light appears on the dashboard he changes down to 3rd and drives at high revs till the light goes off.

Kev.....This is due to a EC directive that all Diesel engines must have a DPF so all new diesel cars that are manufactured from now on come with a DPF.

Just a little bit about DPF's in general since I haven't noticed anyone mention it yet - I think it is worth remembering why there is a DPF: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_particulate_matter

Having a diesel without a DPF is a bit like campaigning against passive smoking whilst smoking Gitanes..

If the way you drive doesn't fit with how the DPF works, definitely buy a petrol driven model instead!

welcome bonfire

love my diesel i just dont want the grief that the filter causes ,its not the filter cleaning the exhaust fumes people dont want its the expense of repairing the poorly designed dpf system ,if they made one that did its job without us having to drive a certain way or worry about it going wrong then we would all be for it ,even if there was a slight aditional cost to change at services then fine but £200 to clean every few months because we dont drive far just local trips is madness, im sure all the boffs at nissan could come up with better working dpf system if they wanted to

That's precisely why I chose the petrol engine Craig and ended up with a fuel-guzzling limousine. I probably spend about the same on petrol as the DPF cleaning cost. It seems you just can't win.

Yeah Craig, if the best they can come up with may cost £200 what was their alternative and at what cost?  As they must have done some research into the best and most profitable way for them rather than the owners of the cars, just what is the goverment input as they are going to be a lot of unhappy consumers if it does turn out the way it looks for people who only do short runs. Shocked

when its something the government insist on and its not there choice it is probably done the cheapest and easiest way ,i doubt tests were run long enough to realize the problems involved but now they know why are they still leaving it as is ,how in this day and age can you supply a affordable family car that has any sort of driving restrictions ,crazy , it doesnt affect me as mine doesnt have one and next time it wouldnt be a problem for me as i do a lot of motorway driving but its just madness to make any car "not suitable" for short trips especially the smallest most economical engine in the range but there ya go ,its a weird world we live in

What you say makes sense Craig, at the end of the day the adverse response from the public will cost them a lot of goodwill they may have built up since the QQ first appeared, which will knock on to all models and all manufactures of dci engines.

I also dont have a DPF fitted to my vehicle just made it before this new european directive came into force its not just Nissan that will be affected all car manufacturers will have to comply.
They are also foreseeing huge problems with diesel locomotives.
Think its directive Euro5 and 6 Just type in  European Emission Standards  into your search engine for all info
