My 60 plate 1.5DCI has thrown up yet another gremlin into the mix,
The engine management light has come on with the following code

Code P0545 Exhaust gas temperature sensor circuit low

I have removed the exhaust sensor probe from the dpf & continuity checked it but it is open circuit with or without heat applied when disconnetcted from the car. I'm not sure if it needs a 5v supply to test or not.

So my question is am I looking at the correct sensor or is there another on the manifold further up the exhaust. And how do i test it is it a thermocouple or resistor type sensor

Download and have a look to the service manual where all your questions are answered in a written form.

Just to add a complicating factor, modern engines often have an exhaust recirculation valve which helps reduce emissions when engine is cold.
Sometimes these get fouled up and stick. I don't know whether QQs have them, nor whether there's a sensor to detect a problem (there was a valve and sensor on my previous car).

If you have a valve and it's sticking maybe it could affect temperature measurements.

Thanks for that speculatrix & duncho.

I have visited a local autosparks for advice and he assures me there is only 1 exhaust gas temp sensor, so I went ahead and ordered one at a cost of just over ú100, fitted it and reset the codes but the fault is still present. I continuity checked the new sensor before fitting and that to was open circuit just like the one I removed that I assumed was faulty.

Speculatrix your theory is interesting as my engine does have an EGR valve, though I am not sure how this would give me this fault code I will look into this further

Woodsy - exact same fault as you on a 60 plate 1.5dci Qashqai. P0545. I've replaced the EGT sensor with a new one. But the Engine Management Light fault remains. Did you eventually determine the cause of the fault?  Was it with the EGR Valve?

I ended up getting rid of the car and part exchanging it for a Honda CRV. I did however find that there is 2 EGT sensors, 1 on the dpf under the car and 1 on the exhaust manifold on the back top left hand side of the engine (when looking from front of car) which is hard to see. I only changed the 1 underneath, I think if I had changed the 1 on the exhaust manifold it probably would have cleared the fault. Mine also had a cracked coolant pipe and the dpf was continually showing up with errors so I decided to get rid.

Aww it's a pity you didn't realise before you got rid.

Anyway, good luck with your new ride.

Tiff, thanks for the welcome.

Woodsy, thank you for taking the time to reply too. Interesting I hooked the OBD Scanner back up and it's throwing up a completely different error now. My sensor on the back top left of the engine was the one changed by coming in through the drivers wheel arch - fiddly. Defo showed zero resistance prior to change.

Hoping the new error is just bad luck and un-related.

P242F -  Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction - Ash Accumulation - will search other forum threads and give it a good motorway run to try and burn the filter out. Although sceptical, only just off the motorway yesterday! It's enough to knock cruise control out again though :/

I had that code initially aswell, it put the car into limp mode, was eventually resolved by injecting some dpf cleaner into the dpf via the hole after the egt sensor had been removed. It was left to soak in a while then after a few miles in limp mode car started picking up and eventually was able to do a good motorway run.

Woodsy - thanks.

I'm unsure what to do next with mine - I'm wondering if the failed EGT sensor has made the car run richer while it's been failed (approx 3 wks) and as a by-product has sooted up the DPF. No more EGT errors, I've re-set the DPF error 3 times but it keeps coming back despite good 20 mile runs to "burn out the soot" for DPF Regeneration. I'm getting no yellow DPF light, just direct to a red EMI indicating the P242F Error.

I'm considering - a DPF Cleaner additive into the fuel and a really good motorway run. Failing that I'm facing forced DPF Regeneration at a local garage. Car is approx 47k miles.

Any other ideas anyone please?

4thbeastieboy - No - Error remains :/ - my next option is to get it into a garage for a hopeful forced regeneration rather than a pricey replacement of the DPF itself. I miss cruise control!

I'd like to conclude this for others having problems - failure of the EGT sensor caused the vehicle to run on default values - the knock-on effect was ash and soot accumulation in the DPF unit.

I've had the vehicle Terracleaned at a local garage (ú180). Back pressure on the DPF was over 3.0psi , the DPF sensor triggers at 3.0psi - post clean the back pressure is 0.5psi.

Car sorted! :)

Yes, the issue was resolved, I still have the vehicle and the fault hasn't returned.
