    Posted: 19 Mar 2012 at 8:41pm
>A few asked for a how to on fitting daylight running lights
so here it is-

I wanted something that fitted in the space where Nissan fit
them on the facelift qq and also street legal. There’s a zillion on ebay but I played
it safe and bought proper e-marked daylight running lights from Halfords

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_787887_langId_-1_categoryId_165688

They’re £49.99, careful of styling lights and marker lights,
not the proper kit! My guide is how to fit these, others may be different to
fit! There’s some batteries in the box so you can see them working in the box
and blind yourself before you buy them! AMAZING!

Preparation

Once you’ve bought them, get you sh1t together, you need-

The lights (Duh!)

Small flathead screwdriver

Drill and 1mm drill bit

Some plastic tie wraps

Piggyback mini-fuse from ebay or possibly your local motor factors

Couple of scotch lock connectors….they may have been in the kit.

Multi-meter (I’m just some guy from the internet, test EVERY
connection that it is the right one, blow something up, you’re on your own!)

I would leave 1-2 hours for the whole job, it’s not hard,
YOU CAN DO IT! PMA

Mounting the lamps

I mounted my lamps here-

There’s not too much to say about this. The lamps are on
brackets, offer up and mark the two holes, drill the holes and a few self
tapping screws and it looks fantastic. Make sure they’re symmetrical otherwise
you will go crazy. Feed the wires up into the top front of the engine bay and
we’ll pick them up later.

Mounting the relay

Now would be a good time to disconnect the battery, I couldn’t
be bothered but if you blow something up, again your loss.

Okay you’ve 1/3 of the way there…already! Open up the bonnet
or hood depending on your regional preference and behold the might engine bay

That stupid air intake is in the way, remove the two plastic
clips arrowed by levering the centres of them. Lift the air intake up and right
off the air box. (You don’t know what the air box is? Good grief, it’s the box
the air intake is connected to!).

Once it’s gone you can see the relay box (note the fuse box
above, we’ll need that in a moment). Take the top off the relay box by pulling
the clip on the right hand side towards the engine.

Look there’s some spare space, RESULT! Mount the relay using
the sticky pad as below. If you’ve got some fancy N-Tec or whatever you might
have less space…serves you right for having such swanky wheels!

All we have to do now is connect the wires. Lets’ do the
earth, it’s right there in front of you. The bottom right pin of the connector
under the blue scotch lock in the picture is earth…ground…earth….you know what I
mean. It’s a black wire with one strip, connect this to the black wire from the
relay.

Right now we need some power! Open up the fuse box above the
relay box. All the fuses are connected to the lid, you weren’t expecting that
were you! You need to get the sidelight feed and the power feed into this box, I
couldn’t get the wires through the bottom tube so drilled a small hole between
the boxes, no one will ever see it! We need an ignition fuse….see all those
easily accessible top two rows of fuses at the top? Unlucky they’re all
permanently live, boooo. There is a small row ignition fuses, really hard to
photo, right at the bottom at the end of the arrow. Look I’m wearing gloves so
I don’t get my hands dirty, what a tart!

Connect the wire from the piggy back fuse to the end of the white
inline fuse wire, live feed for the relay. Pull out one of those ignition fuses
and replace with the piggy back fuse. It’s a bit fiddly in there.

Next you need to connect the yellow wire from the relay to
the sidelight wire. It’s in the same fuse box. I’ve stolen BrianMF’s picture but
you want the sidelight wire, the red/white striped one in the third position
from the left in the front (top) connector in the photo below.

Connected it up using the scotch lock? Brian has used red, I’ve
used blue…which is best…there’s only one way to find out…

Enough of this, we’re 2/3s through! Lets get these lights
connected and check them out. Feed the wires from each light to the top of the
engine bay, feed underneath the loom shown below, tie wrapping in place so they
can’t be seen, nice and tidy and connect to the relay, they’ve got connectors
on, you can’t get this wrong! Keep any surplus wire in the relay box.

If you disconnect the battery, reconnect. Switch on the
ignition and hey presto running lights! Yey! Switch on headlights lights go
off? Yey!

Okay, okay stop admiring them and finish it already. All
those wires in the relay box, tie wrap them together all tidy. Replace the top,
replace the fuse box top. Put the air intake back on and replace the two clip….don’t
tell me you lost or trod on the clips FFS.

That’s it all done, I told you it was easy, now go out and
drive, admire your reflection in the car in front, post some pics let us see! I
see a million QQ’s around Reading, never seen another with DLR so I’ll expect
to see some now.

Now what are you going to do?

Fit a connect? Folding mirror kit? Auto-window kit? Stick on
some bling? Flip key?

Good Job, very informative. Thumbs Up

The only difference between the colours is the thickness of the wire they clamp.

Personally I wouldn't have used a scotchlock under the bonnet where it's open to the elements, they're notorious for corroding and giving dodgy connections. I hate them with a passion!

Thanks! I'm not a great fan of scotch locks but they are contained in the fuse/relay boxes so not open to the elements so should be fine.

I'm not going up north to help you, I get dizzy anywhere north of Oxford!

Just a thought....instead of drilling to fix the lights on, do you think that mammoth tape would hold them in place or are they to heavy?

UPDATED UPDATE

Went down and spoke to two friendly halfords employees, yes no problem, we'lll exchange just one.

Went home and took out the fogged up light, went back and got the miserable ####!!

Changed eventually after a minor stand off and growing angry queue! Jerk.

Didn't seem to be much sealant where the wire goes in so put some more on to be sure.

Oh well, all up and running and mist free!

I have just fitted DRL lights similar to the Halfords ones, I purchased the auto switch and the lights themselves seperate from eBay.  £19 total price.  I already had spade connectors and a fuse box lead thing.

The instructions above were fantastic, and I fitted the lamps by removing the bracket, and fixing them with foam registration pads, which I find are great at fixing light (pardon the pun) weight things - just make sure they are in the position you want, they won't move after they are stuck down!

Another idea that a few folk do use it to replace fog light bulbs with these multi smd type bulbs  which will effectivly turn your fog lights into daytime running lights.

not sure how well it would work but its another idea for the cost off a cheap set off bulbs on ebay.
but yes please do share your pictures.

Fog lights only work when side or main lights are on though so you would have tail lights on as well.

PS: They're a bit awkward to get as well.  Do fancy these though:  http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/H8-35W-LED/?bulb_search=c15594&end=front

PPS:  Excellent pictures and description by slabgood .

Just not sure I have the confidence to do it myself.

The 2nd day shot looks pretty bright, and the night shot definitel show how bright they are - but its the Daytime that you want them to be bright as that is the intentiion...
Might be an idea to stand say 20ft away, slightly offset to the left of the car to take the photo to see the effectiveness in the daytime as if you wer approaching them in another car??!!

Just a thought....

I agree with gadget.

These lights are for daytime and if they're not really that bright then they're not really going to be effective.

These more expensive one's from Halfords appear a lot brighter in daylight and it may be that the lower cost option is not the best choice.

See here also:

NB:  Watch the DRL Fitting Video as well on the 'RING' link website.  They seem a lot easier to install.

Also watch the DRLs In Action as they show them fitted to a Qashqai (Lyra and Ursa).

I think you've been completely fooled there allan.  Those lights are NOT brighter.  The photo has been taken using what's called a starlight filter.  Zoom in over the lights and you'll see the 'threads'.

Yes, I agree, that's why I also posted the Ring link.   Embarrassed LOL

I quite like the LYRA ones.

The fitting looks good.

NB:  Found these customer reviews on the Amazon website.  Maybe the LYRA ones are not as good as the lower cost ones!

PS:  These however, get some very good reviews:

Thumbs Up

They are the 'Lyra' ones that don't get very good reviews on Amazon.

PS:  Here's a link to the Aurora reviews:

The pictures are just taken using a point and shoot camera.  (A Fuji F10 if anyone is interested!!)

I did consider the Lyra ones, just thought they were a bit too long to fit the gap.

I may still change them to the Ring ones if they are brighter, but for less than £20 I'm happy at the moment.

Talking of brightness, have you seen Audi Q7's DRL's they seem to have candles instead of LEDs.
Very Dull.

Yours fit very well blackhawk. They look really good and fit that area just right.

I have the previous model and the flat area you have yours fitted to has a prominent lip on it so I will have to look how to fit them on mine.

PS: It is difficult taking photo's of lights in daylight as the auto exposure tends to take over and detracts from the overall effect of the lights effectiveness.
