you can never tell with Affy but looks like a cross between friend and fiend so guess he's spot on lol.

What did you all learn today? I learnt a bit about light (but didn't pay enough attention) and also creating solid layers from a selection of an image :) What I forgot was good composition but imho it looks ok as is.

.... negative : that my boss is even more of a pooh than I imagined
.... positive : learning to use my camera !!!! VERY POSITIVE : learnt that I can do a moon shot that comes out not ridiculous at all  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chuffed !!!!! but really and truly CHUFFED !!!!

OH ... and I also learnt that if you stand outside fiddling with a tripod in biting wind and minus 15 - you likely need a drop of the IRISH when you come in Clap

Very nice Ma'am :) I've not done many moon shots myself but these look fine and you can see the tripod version seems steadier but not sure of your settings? I seem to remember you need a pretty fast shutter speed? I also prefer shots when the moon isn't full so you can get more detail in the shadow area :)

set Manual
ISO 100
F11
shutter 125
is the best result
I tried 160 and 200 but no...
this is the old sigma 70-300

moon not is the same position obviously from one night to tother
higher for the tripod shot
brighter for the first ... stupid not to have tripoded the first time but was sure that I would not see more than the white round CDRom I usually got :)
... yep would love to get a very early or late moon but might have to wait for years for good conditions ...
I'm not unsatisfied as most moon shots are thru a telescope ... these will come in useful iif I can figure out how to combine stuff ... PSE for dummies .... not got yet
PS thanks for comment on my other image ... I did slide some sliders just a wee bit but I love that yellow bush ... it really is yellow :)

Good to see you playing with several settings :) and glad to see/hear you no longer get white CD's lol. The local hardware store has a big old telescope for sale but keep telling myself I don't need it ;) I've seen some stunning sky shots taken with a dSLR and 200mm lens so no, you don't 'need' a scope.

As for the icy river shot, the water looks stunning - do you go skinny dipping there?

... as this is supposed to be, among others, a photo thread :) I saw a great sight this evening the field opposite my home was shining a milion stars on the snow thats frozen and  polished by the gale force winds ... it was like gold ... but I don't think the image quite shows the effect ...

Nice pics of the Moon Kash, Copernicus and Tycho are very clear, the two large craters.  The moon is always better for detail when waxing or waning.  Its something to do with the dispersion and reflection of light caused by the dust.  It means details get blurred despite the moon being so bright, you can get 'neutral' filters that help.

See the three dark blotches upper right? the centre one is Mare Tranquilus (Sea of Tranquility). Somewhere in that bit is the lunar lander from Apollo 11.  I'd always wished for a telescope powerful enough to see it!  But I don't think its possible.
