Subject: Swapping for LED on ALL remaining lights
Date Posted: 05 May 2015 at 1:51pm
Just wondering if anyone has gone to the extent of swapping out other lights like indicators, reverse lights and so on for LED items.

I've done every interior light, side lights and number plate lights, but would really like to get everything upgraded.

Any links people can post to bulbs used would be handy.

Thanks
Ant

I will be fitting some crees in my reverse lights and fogs at the end of the month. Have fitted them to every car I have had and there brilliant. I will be posting pics but probably wont be until the end of the month as they are 25 for 2 bulbs.

Not see much in terms of 'see me home' lights on the QQ. Someone posted a DRL Module which looks like it is an option on though but need to look closer at this too.

Turn light bulbs finally replaced by LED. Load resistance has been recalculated considering LED input and connected trailer load (to ensure correct indication on the dashboard. Few photos:

1. original bulbs

2. Load resistor glued with heat sink glue

3. Load resistor connected

4. Rear lamps - job done

5. Front turn lights resistors sprayed (to be less visible for dealerships)

6. Glued on invisible inside pillar

7. Connected with removable jumpers

8. Tested, job done!

Nice job indeed..

I have done the side lights and it looks good.... What do you think makes the best impact for the next LED upgrade? Interiors? I have done the interiors on my other car using a 24 led board that came with various connectors so it will fit any type of bulb carrier..... Lights the car up like a football pitch!! I was looking at LED fogs next....mmm decisions. I don't think I'll bother with indicators.....I can see the sense in the brake lights though.

The qashqai is just 501 sidelight bulbs on the interior so just pure white led bulbs but not too big as there is a maximum size between connector and the plastic cover

I installed  http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Shipping-2pcs-lot-80w-High-Power-Cree-LED-Vehicles-Car-Turn-Signal-Brake-Lights/1440716676.html" rel="nofollow - these  high power bulbs for turn lights, they also have RED color for brake/tail lights. The consumption is about 436mA at 12V (when cold) so the balance resistors used are of 8R2/50W resistance.

For the interior lights are used  http://www.aliexpress.com/item/led-12v-led-5050-board-for-nissan-qashqai-2014-brightness-adjustable-super-bright-high-quality-error/1810555480.html" rel="nofollow - these bulbs,  however they are extremely bright.  At the end, it is not an issue as you can adjust their power ;).

I've done the full interior, number plate and side lights - although I need to replace the sidelight ones as they're too blue for the stock HIDs. I definitely want to do the full works in LED. What are the ratings on the load resistors? I'll have a proper read of that thread when I get some time.

50w load resistors will do the job.. Make sure you are careful where you mount them and not on plastic as they do get extremely warm

It's more about the resistance than power. He could even use 20W resistors if these (as you said) are properly cooled. If resistance is lower than 6R per bulb, dashboard will indicate trailer connected to the car, if higher than 10R, LEDs will flash fast to indicate that one of the bulbs is broken.

Bit of a resurrection... I've ordered some 50w 6ohm load resistors to go with some LED bulbs, hopefully they'll arrive soon and I can get to fitting them. Question I now need to answer is where to mount the resistors due to the heat they put out. Front isn't too much of an issue, but the rear could be. I like the idea that did duncho, have you had any problems with the heat on the light housing?

Nice one! Good to know. I'll be popping the lights off mine shortly to do the same sort of swap. Need to figure out how to sort out the fronts as the bulb carrier has the connections on the inside of the housing. One to think about.

Are there differences between the J10/J11? I took the front indicator out this morning and its just a carrier. There will obviously be a feed to the light housing, but I have yet to locate that - can't say I looked too much today as I was trying to get the bumper off rather than play with the lights.

I can't remember J10 exactly, but I think it is the same. J11 has a plastic holder which you need to turn and pull out. Why did it take so long to decide for LED swap?

Posted By: cantfindausername
Date Posted: 20 Mar 2016 at 10:19pm
The plastic carrier comes out easily, but there are no wires attached. I'll locate them when I get the bits in. Bulbs and resistors are en-route. I decided pretty much before I bought the car that I'd be doing LED's, but never got round to doing the work due to other commitments. I'm giving the car some much deserved mods which I've had on the to-do list for far to long :)

There are 100% leading wires to a bulb socket when you pull out that plastic holder on J11. I did it on mine, just check photos on my previous post. It took you almost 1 year to does this mod :)

My next project is to replace fogs with these Philips LEDs:

Clearly some differences between the 2 then. I've actually done very little to the car over the summer and majority of the winter. Its only because I've got a road trip lined up that I thought I'd get cracking on the list.

Those bulbs are pretty impressive! Keep us posted!

Has anyone updated the indicators to LED on a J10 using canbus LED bulbs?

I'm assuming that using canbus LED's will remove the need to add the resistors.

As the J10 has side repeater indicators, going the resistor route will require 6 resistors and a lot of messing around trying to fix them in aconvenient place, whereas just changing the bulbs should be quick and easy.

I've just added the side repeaters the other week and they don't need resistors. Also, from what I understand, there is no can-bus for the indicators, just the hyper-flash on the relay. I could well be wrong there though so would be interested if someone could confirm. FYI - I've got the 4 load resistors and bulbs ready to go... just need to find suitable wiring to patch into at the front and a mounting location. Let me know how you get on.

I realise that there is no canbus on the Qashqai, but as the canbus LED's have a built in resistor to fool the light monitor systems, on other vehicles, I was hoping I could use the canbus LED indicators to avoid messing around with additional resistors.

What LED's did you use in the side repeaters?

If you get the canbus ones and find you don't need a resistor do let us know as its locating a suitable place for the resistors which is delaying this piece of work for me at the moment.

As per a previous discussion on the J10 bulb holder. I just whipped it out to try an LED bulb in there. Not going to be easy to plug in a load resistor as I don't know where the wiring goes at the moment. As can be seen, it is just a holder that connects inside the light housing so no external wire to tap into.

Just been under the hood with the multi meter - damn I'm impatient lol

Its the green wire on this connector block which has the 12v supply to the indicator. There are 2 earths by the looks of it, so would I be ok to tap the load resistor into either one of these do you think?

Yes, you can plug it to any of them, no matter to which one, both are grounded. Make a video blinking before and after. I was so excited with LED upgrade that I forgot to make a video with incandescent bulb.

Went outside this morning to tackle the rear lights as they were the easiest and I was short on time.

Test fitted the resistors for placement before securing anything in place.

Then secured them in place with some 3M strips I had from a while ago.

I've used to 27 SMD LED bulbs, which serve fine as a proof of concept - I may swap these out for something a little brighter in the near future though. They're fine in normal light conditions. The sun was on that side of the car this morning where as the old bulbs were effectively shaded so could account for some of the difference. Certainly when I've looked at them since they fine and no one has beeped me when switching lanes/turning etc when I've been out.

My plan to use canbus LED for the indicators was a failure, the indicators still require the resistor!!

So next plan is to send back the bulbs I have and get some non canbus ones.

In the meantime, can you tell me which wires you used for adding your front indicator resistors. Was the indicator power on the green wire for both sides, and which wire did you use for the earth?

Also, where was the connector for the front indicators?

Using LEDs with integrated resistor so called "CANBUS error free" is not a good idea to use for indicators. Turn lights are very important lights that prevents you causing an incident. CANBUS error free LEDs produce significant amount of heat and for indicators they would need to dissipate around 20W!!! Taking into consideration that high lumonisity power LEDs consume only about 3-5W and produce already pretty much heat, you would need to dissipate additional 16W in heat! That means that they would get baking hot bulb within 2-3 min of blinking. They would survive easily if you indicate with few three blinks a time, but die quickly if you turn them ON in case of danger (with HAZARDS ON).

CANBUS error free LEDs can be made for low wattage bulbs like T10 (W5W) or similar. Though, they get very hot either, but those are not "life savers" and if they start flickering or blow due to extra heat, no big deal. But failing hazards in a dangerous situation... hard to imagine...

I've not installed the front ones yet. Need to figure out if I've got enough working room behind the passenger side light as its crammed like silly down there (which is why my dipped and full beam bulbs havn't been changed yet).

I will double check the wiring on the passenger side, but I can't think of a valid reason why Nissan would change the location of a power cable on the other side of the car. So, yes, middle cable on the front light connector block for +ve and the outer (black cable) for -ve. At the rear its the 2 outer cables on the rear light connector block (polarity not important).

Keep us posted on your progress, and let us know what bulbs you go for in the end.

Thanks
Ant

Welll I think I'm done with the light upgrades on the car. I can't for the life of me get the passenger side light connector off, and I don't really think I can be arsed to remove the bumper to change a bulb so I'm just going to live with stock front lights.

I've never known such an impossible car to work on! Its f'ing rediculous!!

Did you the front indicator upgrade?

If so, how did the resistor installation get implemented?

I think the most ridiculous lights to changed are the reversing lights. I did mine this week and had a bit of a problem getting the tailgate trim pulled off enough to get to the bulbs, but done now and only broke one clip (fortunately I had some spares).

There is a thread here somewhere that recommends using a 16mm socket to fit over the side light holders to enable them to be pulled out. I used this method and it worked well.

Reverse lights I found a doddle - once I'd figured that the light unit wasn't going to come out and needed to go behind the trim. It was a squeeze but not too bad. I've not done the front indicators as I can't get the passenger side light connector off the housing. There is a clip that you need to push down, but you can't get anything in there to press on it. I've already dropped a screwdriver through there in an attempt to get some leverage. There is just too much stuff in the way to do anything on that passenger side light cluster.
Side lights were done ages ago - again fiddly, but do able with care.
I'm sure I'll be back out there at some point turning the air blue in an attempt to get this connector off.

Well... it seems that venting a little and eating an apple gave me the break I needed...

Using a different approach, I managed to get level with the connector and put a longer screwdriver into the clasp and off it came. You can see the screwdriver handle on the left, and the grey 5 wire connector cllllll the way over on the right.

After I tapped in the wire on the passenger side I found that the bulbs I have won't work in the bulb carriers. Not sure why, but there was nothing. Bulbs are known to be good too.

Humming, which bulbs do you have, and have you tried them yet?

I bought some Twenty20 led bulbs today. Hoping they're here for the weekend. I left the spliced in wires on the passenger side as that will enable easier fitting and location of the load resistor. Once the wires are taped up or covered in heat shrink it will look stock and tidy. Just hope these bulbs work up front. Also going to replace the rears as I think the ones I have are too weak when there is sun on the car.

More updates to follow...

Swapped out to the new bulbs this morning before work. Loads of difference! I have yet to try them up front, but the rears I'm a lot happier with now.

Well what a result!! I was thinking about the wiring today and putting the resistors in up front and then thought, "well the rears already have a resistor, I wonder if one per circuit is enough?". So I popped one of the new bulbs in up front where I'd already extended the wiring and low and behold... No need for another resistor!! So all I need to do now is remove the wiring extension and it's all done. Full LED indicators - Done!!

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but I've been on holiday. I bought the Twenty20 bulbs as well, from ABD (using the clubs 10% discount of course).

Excellent news on the indicators bulbs/resistors, using one resistor per side makes things a lot easier. I wasn't looking forward to messing around with the front indicators due to the lack of space and limited access to the wiring there.

I will now go ahead and do my indicators soon.
