Hi guys, my parents 2008 qashqai keeps cutting out whilst driving, if you look at the dash, only the ignition lights could on as though it stalled. Also sometimes it won't start, it just turns over, leave it a short time, like 30mins and try again, it'll start.
Interestingly the engine management light doesn't come on to indicate a problem.

Does any one have any ideas, they've had the rac out. But the car behaved when they arrived.

When was it last serviced? Assume oil etc ok? Battery? Does it stand for long periods of time? Overheating?

Service was 6months ago, doesn't appear to be overheating as won't always start first thing in the morning, engine just turns over and over, won't fire.

Used everyday so doesn't stand

Could be a million-and-one things. You'd need to get the OBD (on board diagnostic) codes read to have a better idea, really. That's cheap enough.

It's cheap enough to get a garage to do. Or you could buy yourself a cheap OBD reader. If you're technically minded you could get an OBD reader off ebay for less than twenty quid, link it to a laptop and read them like that.

You'll get back a numeric code, which you can typically look up on the internet and that will give you some idea about what's wrong.

The starting problems sounds like possible heater plug problems (it's about the right age) but usually diesels don't spontaneously stop due to knackered plugs, they're just hard to start.

What engine is it ?
As i know there are problems with renault fuel pumps wearing out end up full of iron fillings just a guess but sounds like fuel pump problem might need leak off test.

could be a long shot but could the diesel pressure be low , try pumping the pressure up using ghe rugby ball shaped pump under the bonnet , left hand side at the back

And, if that were the case, I'd expect the OBD port to show a low pressure status.

Ok guys, a update, went on the Nissan diag and it reports error codes to the fuel pump, apparently there is a valve on the pump and this is causing the car to shut down, the dealer has reset this and all seems fine now 10days have passed.
