Hi, I just bought a used (59 plate) 1.6 petrol and as much as I'm loving it, its revs seem way too high in some situations:  driving along a dual carriageway at 60mph in 5th gear and revs are 3200...sometimes as high as 3500!...its like it wants a sixth gear...its only got 44k on the clock...any advice/ideas appreciated.

Does the car have a manual gear box or the CVT?

Its a feature of the 1.6L to meet the eco regs of the time.  Its normal for it to show 3500 at top motorway speeds.  Yes you are correct, it does need a 6thh gear.   Cry

I assume you haven't tried any steep hills whilst fully loaded yet. CryCry

Thanks Tekna, very useful.  Once I hit the country lanes near my place I go up three steep narrow hills and am down to second at about 20mph...revs normal then.

and bigger wheels!!  I find the tyre noise when I'm at speed really loud already...by bro says its cos my wheels are so big...guessing its a fortune when they need replacing?

Was part in jest but also part basic physics. The question would be would it make a noticeable difference.

"A larger wheel will result in slower acceleration and higher top speed if the engine has enough power. If not, at least the top speeds in each gear but the last will be higher. A smaller wheel will result in faster acceleration if tire spin doesn't become an issue, and top speed may be lookingreduced if the car was properly geared for top speed before the wheel change."

Bigger wheels, same rpm, u go faster. So same target speed, bigger wheels, less rpm.

Tips for gradient - if climbing gradient from standing start, don't be tempted to change gear up too early as you will lose revs/momentum.

And neither the speedometer nor the odometer will show correct values ....

Speedometers never do anyway, but I really doubt it would save enough revs as to be even noticeable
