I got my 2014 ntec+ from a Nissan main dealer a month ago and was happy to see all 4 tyres were brand new, full tread etc.
But it completely escaped my attention that the front two are Riken Maystorm2 tyres, not the usual Contis which are on at the back. Only noticed by chance this weekend when cleaning the car. Anyone got any experience of these? They seem very cheap for an 18", but are doing the job well, nice smooth and quiet. Online reviews suggest they are good in the summer, not so good in the winter. They are the type of tyres that are put on when getting rid of a vehicle. Pre MOT on my 370z it was in the garage for repair following a motorcyclist not looking where he was going. The garage said you could do with new tyres, mot due etc, they had supplied others before always good so I thought why not. Never in my life have I seen so much traction control lights! Never again they last two weeks before I got Michelin P3 fitted. |

Wonder - as they are not original QQ spec - whether dealer needs a talking to? Insurance companies can be very ar5ey about some non original kit.

Pray, enlighten me... are there only certain kinds of tires in GB specified/allowed for a certain car?
My knowledge is, that any tire (regardless of brand) in the correct size may be mounted on a car... I admit, there are really cheap brands and if those tires are fitted on a car you'd have difficulties staying on the road. But that's your own risk and not forbidden by law, as those tires are still sold (and bought). ![]() |

It was a used car, I'm guessing the previous owner may have put them on. In my experience, main dealers would have sold it to me at anything just above the legal limit rather than put new ones on, however cheap they may be. Surely tyres don't come under original spec? There's never been anything I've seen anywhere that says when you are next in the need to replace a tyre you have to use the original fitted brand? These Riken's are made by Michelin so probably not that bad, but all the reviews say otherwise! Might swap them around though so the Contis are at the front. |

In order to keep the insurance company happy I thought you need to keep to original tyre spec. For example original may be 215/55R18. 99V XL
As long as you keep to that the maker does not matter , but it might if you intend to stay on the road. My son actually runs a set of Chinese tyres on his Land Rover truck cab but they are cross ply (only set we could find)and only do about 50 miles a year, top speed about 45 (downhill) ,but it was made in 1955. Sure I was being pedantic about matching the original tyres, but insurance companies can be VERY pedantic if it means wriggling out of a big claim - they will look at anything I imagine.

I think you were being accurate in matching the original tyres in respect of the designed specification. As regard insurance companies looking to wriggle out of paying out on a big claim, surely this is other side of customers looking to avoid paying what may be the realistic price for insurance. We reap what we sow.. |

It's been very wet here in Cheshire today, and I've tried pulling away ramming my foot down, done some emergency stops at 60mph on long traffic free roads. So far no slips, skids, or ESP lights.
So for now these Riken tyres will do me. Maybe the Maystorm2 is much improved on the Maystorm. |

I have just replaced all 4 originals after 26k miles. Nissan offered contis at £250 each ( couldn't manage that) or own brand at £63 each (worries me at that price) so compromised with Avon ZX7 XL at £94 each from ATS.
They have been on a week and are fantastic. Noise levels are low, grip is great, especially in the wet and they have had a surprising effect on ride quality. It has settled a little more and the car feels very stable. Can fully recomend Edited by cd1yat - 30 May 2017 at 1:02pm |
