Crikey, now you're asking.

Long ago (1961) my first car was a big old Wolseley: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wolseley_25_6_Saloon_1937.jpg

Cost £25 and I had to save for weeks to get it. It was a right banger and burnt almost a pint of oil to a tank of fuel, not that I could ever afford to put that much petrol in it! It ended up in the breakers yard 3 months later.

Various old cars followed, but lets move a bit more up-to-date and look at my latter years at work where I enjoyed over the years: A Rover SD1, two Jaguar XJ saloons, two Lexus LS400 and finally a Lexus LS430.

Retirement saw me getting a Honda Accord followed by a Mini Cooper Works (had to get it out of my system!) followed by a Honda Civic EX.

That was swapped for my current Qq Tekna 2.0L CVT, which I really like.  Think I'm more pleased with my current car than any of the previous ones.

Mini Clubman (list price £923, around the annual salary of a 22 yr old graduate civil engineer!)
Austin 1300
Morris Marina 1.8
Rootes Alpine 1.4
Talbot Alpine 1.5
Austin Montego 1.6
Austin Montego 2.0
Ford Mondeo 2.0 (not from new)
Cavalier SRi (not from new)
Cavalier SRi
Vectra SRi
Skoda Octavia L&K 1.8 petrol
Skoda Octavia L&K 1.9 diesel
Skoda Octavia L&K 1.9 HDi
Nissan QQ 1.6 (list price £19k ish, so less than the annual salary of a 22yr old graduate engineer?)

In 45 years, the 'equivalent' money now gets you a QQ Tekna instead of a Mini Clubman, which apart from drum brakes all round and STATIC seat belts,  had NO other safety equipment like air bags, ABS, TC, power steering, servo brakes, aircon, xenon headlights, headlamp washers, variable speed wipers, auto dim rear view mirror, heated retractable door mirrors,  not to mention flow-thru ventilation, reclining and height adjustable and heated seats, SatNav, reversing camera, glass roof, audio with bluetooth.

So, you could say we've never had it so good ...

1.6 Tekna, Blade Silver+ESP+SatNav. + MetaSR2Targa parking sensors, QQ Mats, QQ Club sticker and now RGM 'Rearguard'

The Mk1 Cortina was very rust coloured around the suspension mounts - MOT failure Angry.

The E type (straight 6 - 4.2 litre) went like a rocket mate - 135mph on the motorway in Holland and 70mph still in second gear once to scare a mate around the A406 in North London (40 mph limit Embarrassed) and it was just cruising Tongue.  However they suffered badly from rust (I must have a thing for that colour LOL) mostly on the doors.  It was only 4 years old when I got it and the previous owner had already replaced the outer door skins Shocked - imagine that on a 'quality' car these days.  Pulled up at the lights next to one a couple of years ago that could easily have been mine (same spec, same year, same colour and could have been renumbered as mine had a personal plate).  I said the classic 'I used to have one of those' - like it?  He replied  - Love it but it's a constant battle against the rust.

Oooh I love this nostalgia thing.  The Daimler was posh in fact just an upmarket XJ6 (I had a Jag thing going on).  I don't know if they still do now, but it had 2 fuel tanks and when I picked it up I filled them both...........£££££££Shocked.  Never did that again - far too scary.

Hope it wasn't as troublesome as the three XJ's I had over the years.

Loads of problems on all three cars.  They were the most unreliable cars I ever had, but like you, I just loved them - at the time!

This got me thinking about neighbours we had in the early eighties who really thought they were posh, because they owned an Allegro Vanden Plas! That must arguably be the most shocking car ever made, the grill was the size of Birmingham!  LOL

Yep indeed - Imagine how much that would cost in todays money???..... Second mortgage time I think....

I've had my Qashqai a week and it's only my second car of my own Shocked

My trade-in was my much loved 2002 Honda Civic SE Sport, which I had for five years.
It was a brilliant car with loads of toys, just didn't have the fuel economy and dog space I really wanted!
