My first experience with a Diesel engine, reading conflicting info, so who better to ask than you guys, which oil is most popular among us 1.5 Dci owners? Don't really want to line dealers pockets for their oil so what is recommended by qashqai owners? Fully synthetic or part 5w 30??, makes & stockists much appreciated.

Shell Helix 5W40.  It's what a Renault main dealer put in at the last service.  It's a Renault engine in there..

Thanks Chris, no common oil seems to used by us qashqai owners so far, I'm a little confused as I was told to use only part synth oil only in my QQ 1.5dci engine but many seem to go for the fully synthetic choice. Anyone notice any differences as I've read that part synth oil can make the Diesel engine run a little quieter. All feedback much appreciated

You never mentioned whether yours has a DPF or not. If it does, then there's not really much choice, the manual states:
K9K without DPF: 5W30 preferable, use the chart
K9K WITH DPF : ONLY use 5W30 low SAPS
The chart for non DPF is:

This chart has to apply to all temperature extremes the QQ can be sold to, which is why 5W30 is recommened as it covers all bases.   In the UK we won't really see -20, so a 10W.. oil would be fine.

For the synthetic/not question, I had read that fully synthetic oil does not "coke up" when in contact with high temperatures.  When you shut off your car, your turbo is at an extremely high temperature and the oil is no longer flowing freely to cool it, so it bakes.  Non-synthetic oil can coke up (get bits in it) which can then cause problems down the road.  Fully synthetic does not really do this.  (Which is why it says in the manual to let your car idle for a bit before shutting off the car, as it lets the oil carry on flowing around the turbo after it starts to cool).

Chrisw99 superb, thankyou, very comprehensive. Think I'll be going the fully synth route after that lay-mans terms explanation. Still interested to know if one brand of oil is most popular with us QQ owners, as Mobil 1 was the oil of choice in my "hot hatch" days! was almost a designer brand for your car back then!

1.5 dci non dpf.........couple years ago castrol website and eurocarparts used to say magnetic 5w30 A1,, Haynes manual says 5w30 low saps c4 ( including dpf which says only), now castrol website says magnetic c3 5w30 or edge 0w30 fst titanium,

Lots of recommended say c3 5w30,

Who's right? Are all of them?

Is the genuine Nissan 5w30 dpf ok for the non dpf engine? ...again different nissan dealers say different things, for one of the most popular cars around, it's terrible that a customer can not just get a simple answer..... It's important because they say it s important to put right spec in, so which one Mr Nissan

5W30 ACEA C4 is mandatory for diesel engines WITH dpf - and a look into the manual chapter 9 will tell you what oil Nissan recommends for your type of engine...

Glovebox compartment book says 5w30 a1-b1.... Udoone, as i mentioned the haynes manual, and u replied to my message saying look at the manual chapter 9 , thought u meant the haynes.😏
My point being, all say different specs , i know the nissan manual that came with car says 5w30 a1 but, if a nissan dealer mechanic says 5w40 c3 , is it because the non dpf engines are more suited to that oil now as most have wear on them now? Also i read that the higher the viscosity of the larger number will make the engine work a lttle harder due to being thicker when hot, but thats probably so little it wont make that much difference?
Anyone know if putting a c3 spec in rather then a1 will have any adverse effect , i know c3 is recommended for other 1.5 dci non dpf engines in renault cars ( the qashqais 1.5 is a renault engine)

Id stick to what the Nissan owners manual says,,,,, they can't argue with that...... Unlike a mechanic who may have told you what he thought on that particular day of the week

If your car is fitted with a DPF it is vital to use the correct oil. Our Nissan dealer supplies this in 1ltr or 5 ltr bottles and it is no more expensive than anywhere else so no rip-off.
